LATEST NEWS & UPDATES
THE CURRENT CRISIS How many animals are Alabama shelters dealing with annually?
From an un-scientific survey based on confidential and public information the numbers for 2008 were:
Intake - 160,000
Euthanasia - 120,000
These are very sad numbers indeed!
And indications for 2009 are that these numbers are going up!!!!!!
Is there any good news?
YES!
Alabama’s low-cost spay/neuter clinics (see below), Maddie’s Fund Projects and other low-cost Spay/Neuter programs resulted in over 20,000 spay/neuter surgeries in 2008 which undoubtedly prevented even higher intake and euthanasia numbers.
ALABAMA ANIMAL ALLIANCE in Montgomery has doubled in size and capacity and recently went over 10,000 surgeries. ALABAMA SPAY NEUTER in Irondale has done over 9,000 surgeries in one year and soon will open a 6,800 square foot, four surgery suite facility. THE WIREGRASS SPAY NEUTER CLINIC in Dothan is doing great and is helping pet owners in Southeast Alabama, Southwest Georgia and Northwest Florida.
THE CURRENT & FUTURE CHALLENGE
Educating the public on Responsible Pet Ownership with the goal of reducing the Intake which will also then reduce the Euthanasia of so many wonderful animals who did not deserve this fate!
??Are you up to the challenge??
