LEGISLATIVE ALERT-UPDATED 3/11/10

The legislative session is almost half-way through so wanted to send an update as to the status of bills we are working/watching as we know them today. I had previously sent out the bills in their original language but have not attached them to this as many have had amendments or are being worked on, so the actual and absolutely current version is not readily available to send out. You can go to ALISON http://alisondb.legislature.state.al.us/acas/acaslogin.asp to look for bills, but even ALISON may have versions that are not a true reflection of a bill as it stands today. The bill sponsors and those working directly on it (for or against) are the ones who generally have the most current language. But here is the way it looks today – feel free to ask any questions on a particular bill and we’ll do our best to get you the status as we know it.

HB147 Madison County Dangerous Dog Sitting in Senate Committee for local legislation; No change from 2-9-10 update

HB 377 Antifreeze Bittering Agents Not yet in committee, no change from 2-9-10 update. Checking with sponsor to see if there has been any issues

HB402 County Shelter Tax Check Off Received FAVORABLE vote from the Education Appropriations Committee (as of 2-17-10)

HB 342 Cockfighting Today (3-10-10) was the public hearing in the House AG committee. Held in Room 807 – well over 100 attendees to the hearing. Much discussion from both sides, lots of questions from the committee members. Main concern seems to be ensuring those who raise Game Birds for showing, love of the birds, etc are not negatively impacted. Rep Jackson, Committee Chair, ordered a sub-committee to take this, work out differences and come back with something the whole committee can vote up or down on. Still a long way to go to get our weak cockfighting penalty increased in Alabama! If this bill does make it to the floor for a vote we will want a HUGE show of support to get this through.

SB159 Pets in Evacuation Plans Still in committee, no change from 2-9-10 update

HB529 Spay Neuter Tax Check Off Program Was amended to simply correct a name and received FAVORABLE vote from Education Appropriations committee on 2-17-10

HB480 Bonding & Disposition Amended version received FAVORABLE vote of Judiciary committee

Let’s hope the second half of our legislative session is a productive one.
